Making your home more energy efficient with ENERGY STAR can help to reduce high energy bills and improve comfort. Many common home problems like moisture on window panes; ice dams; peeling paint; and mold, can also often be solved by taking steps to improve energy efficiency. READ MORE >>

The Energy Star program was developed in 1992 by the EPA to identify and promote energy efficient products that reduced the emission of carbon dioxide into the air.  In 1996, the program was expanded to include the Department of Energy so that other energy efficient product categories could be recognized.  The Energy Star program is now designed to bring energy savings to homeowners and covers windows, doors, siding, new homes, most of the building sector, residential heating and cooling equipment, major appliances, office equipment, lighting, consumer electronics and more.

Windows must meet specific criteria for U-Value and Solar Heat Gain in order to qualify as an Energy Star product.  Because window performance varies by climate, the requirements are area specific to provide the consumer with the most accurate rating available.  Many products sold by Accent Southwest Windows meet or exceed Energy Star requirements.

Energy Star windows will cut your energy costs significantly.  Experts agree that your investment could be paid back in as little as three years.  Having energy efficient windows means that your heating and cooling systems run less frequently, decreasing the amount of pollution generated by those systems.  Energy Star products provide you with an opportunity to save money and help the environment at the same time.

NFRC

The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) is a private non-profit organization created by the members of the window, door and skylight industry to provide consumers with a means to compare the energy efficiency of various brands of windows and doors.  It was established to help protect consumers from outlandish advertising and false promises made by some of the less reputable window manufacturers.  The NFRC is composed of manufacturers, suppliers, builders, architects and designers, specifiers, code officials, utilities and government agencies.  Standards have been determined for the U-Factor, Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), Visible Transmittance (VT), and Air Leakage (AL).  Only products that meet these strict standards are allowed to display the NFRC label.  All products that meet the NFRC's specifications have the NFRC label on them, and all Energy Star rated products also bear the NFRC label.  Products sold by Accent Southwest carry the NFRC label and meet or exceed NFRC standards in all 50 states.

EFFICIENT WINDOWS COLLABORATIVE

The Efficient Windows Collaborative (EWC) was developed by the University of Minnesota, Alliance to Save Energy, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.  The EWC provides extensive non-biased information on selecting windows through a website that offers the consumer an opportunity to evaluate the whole window performance of different window options.

BUILDGREENNM.com

The Home Builders Association of Central New Mexico (HBA of CNM) developed Build Green NM to promote and facilitate sustainable construction.  The HBA of CNM has been an active proponent of green building since 1997, and has tried a few programs before settling on Build Green. Build Green New Mexico was launched March 10, 2006 at the National Green Building Conference, which we hosted here in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Learn more>>
